Venice has long been amongst Italy's leading tourist cities and enjoys high visitor numbers throughout the year, with plenty of hotels on hand to match the constant demand. Accommodation in Venice varies greatly and ranges from the most basic lodging tucked away down remote side streets, to stunning palatial five-star hotels, overlooking the piazza of San Marco (St. Mark's Square) and the famous Grande Canal (Canal Grande) itself.
Some of the most notable accommodation options residing in the San Marco area of Venice include the Al Gembero on the Calle dei Fabbri, and the very affordable Locanda Casa Petrarca Hotel on the Calle delle Schiavine, off the Calle dei Fuseri, which is amongst the best budget choices. Close to San Marco and on the western side of the Grand Canal, further lodging presents itself within the districts of San Polo and Santa Croce.
As a major tourist destination Venice offers some of Italy's finest hotels, but accommodation is limited and can very quickly book out for the summer months.
No vehicles are permitted in the Venice city precinct, adding to its charm and you'll need to arrange a transfer by vaporetti (water taxi). Pre booking is a good idea as it might be inconvenient to go looking for accommodation upon arrival. More options are available in nearby Mestre on the mainland.
